Exemples

Identifier le type de plusieurs fichiers

$ file logo.png script.sh données.csv archive.tar.gz
logo.png:        PNG image data, 256 x 256, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced
script.sh:       Bourne-Again shell script, ASCII text exécutable
données.csv:     CSV text
archive.tar.gz:  gzip compresséd data, from Unix, original size modulo 2^32 10240

Afficher le type MIME des fichiers

$ file -i index.html style.css app.js image.webp
index.html: text/html; charset=utf-8
style.css:  text/css; charset=utf-8
app.js:     text/javascript; charset=utf-8
image.webp: image/webp; charset=binary

Identifier un fichier sans extension

$ file /usr/bin/python3 /etc/shadow document_inconnu
/usr/bin/python3: ELF 64-bit LSB pie exécutable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked
/etc/shadow:      regular file, no read permission
document_inconnu: PDF document, version 1.7, 12 pages
